To visit the Kashgar Gaotai Folk Houses, tickets should be purchased in advance through online platforms (such as Meituan or Ctrip) or on-site. The site is open daily from 10:30 to 20:00, and visiting during off-peak hours is recommended. The lanes within the scenic area are narrow and mostly unpaved, so it is essential to wear comfortable flat shoes. The Gaotai Folk Houses are a living community still in use, so please respect the local residents' lives during your visit—avoid making loud noises and ask for permission before taking photos of residents, artisans, or inside shops. It is highly recommended to experience intangible cultural heritage activities such as pottery making. Booking a guided tour in advance is advisable to gain a deeper understanding of Uyghur architectural culture and folk customs. Due to the strong ultraviolet radiation in Kashgar, sun protection and hydration are important. The Gaotai Folk Houses are adjacent to the Kashgar Old City and the Id Kah Mosque, making it convenient to combine visits to these sites.

The Kashgar Gaotai Folk Houses are perched on a high cliff at the northeastern end of the Kashgar Old City in Xinjiang. This community of traditional earth-built structures, dating back to the 16th century, is preserved to this day and is acclaimed as a "living folk museum." The houses are stacked layer upon layer against the cliff, renowned for their unique architectural features such as "over-street buildings" and "half-street buildings." The interiors are adorned with traditional craftsmanship, including brick and wood carvings and painted caisson ceilings, showcasing the wisdom of Uyghur architecture in harmony with the natural environment. Today, hundreds of households still reside here, preserving intangible cultural heritage skills and daily customs such as pottery making, weaving, and baking nang (flatbread). Visitors can try their hand at pottery making, savor traditional foods, and experience the vibrant, millennia-old Silk Road marketplace atmosphere. The Gaotai Folk Houses are not only a National AAA-level tourist attraction but also a living cultural heritage site under the attention of UNESCO, offering a vivid, three-dimensional portrayal of Uyghur culture, architectural aesthetics, and the historical context of Kashgar.
