Before departure, ​conduct a comprehensive vehicle check​ to ensure it is in good condition (especially tires, brakes, cooling system, and air conditioning). Carry a spare tire, tow rope, jack, tire repair kit, sufficient fuel (it is recommended to fill up in Luntai or Minfeng and top up at Tazhong Service Area), and at least 2-3 days' worth of emergency drinking water and food. Regarding precautions, please pay close attention to the following: First, climate and protection. The desert is extremely hot during the day (surface temperatures can exceed 60°C in summer), cold at night, with intense UV radiation. ​You must prepare high-SPF sunscreen, sunglasses, hats, face scarves, and warm clothing. Store a large amount of drinking water in the vehicle (recommended at least 4 liters per person per day) to prevent heatstroke and dehydration. Second, driving and safety. The entire route has speed limits; please strictly adhere to the posted speed limit signs (usually 60-80 km/h) and do not speed. The entire route is a two-lane asphalt road (one lane each direction), but ​sand dunes on both sides may shift onto the road surface, requiring constant vigilance; slow down when encountering sand piles. Avoid parking on sandy road shoulders to prevent getting stuck. Fatigue driving is strictly prohibited; it is recommended to take a break every 2 hours. Third, communication and navigation. Most sections of the highway ​have no mobile phone signal. You must download complete offline maps in advance and inform family or friends of your detailed itinerary and schedule. It is advisable to carry a satellite phone for emergency contact. Fourth, timing and itinerary. Avoid driving during the hottest afternoon hours (12:00-16:00); try to travel in the early morning or evening. ​Do not drive at night​ due to low visibility and the high risk of encountering wildlife (such as wild camels). Calculate fuel consumption and supplies to ensure you can safely reach the next service point (Tazhong Service Area is the only major supply point along the entire route). Fifth, environmental protection and regulations. Do not drive off the road and damage fragile vegetation. ​All trash must be taken out of the desert; littering is strictly prohibited. Respect the oil field facilities operating along the route and do not enter restricted areas. Sixth, emergency preparedness. If your vehicle breaks down or you encounter danger, try to park in an emergency stopping area and turn on your hazard lights. If there is no signal, wait for rescue by the roadside (patrol vehicles pass daily); do not blindly venture into the desert on foot to seek help.

The Tazhong Desert Highway, officially named the Luntai-Minfeng Desert Highway, is a major transportation artery that runs through the heart of the Taklamakan Desert. It starts in Luntai County, Bayingolin Mongol Autonomous Prefecture, in the north, and ends in Minfeng County, Hotan Prefecture, in the south, spanning approximately 522 kilometers in total. It is the longest graded highway in the world that continuously traverses shifting sand desert. Opened to traffic in 1995, this road is not only a remarkable engineering feat that conquered the "Sea of Death," but also a green ecological corridor stretching hundreds of kilometers. To combat sand drift erosion, builders constructed a massive sand-control system along both sides of the highway, consisting of reed checkerboard barriers and drought-resistant plants. This system effectively stabilizes the sand and protects the road, creating a model of ecological governance where "humans advance and sand retreats." The highway traverses magnificent desert landscapes, featuring undulating dunes, scattered poplar trees, towering oil well derricks, and unique desert sunsets and brilliant starry skies. It is not only a vital trunk route connecting northern and southern Xinjiang and an "energy lifeline" supporting the development of the Tarim Oilfield, but also an iconic route for self-driving enthusiasts to experience extreme wilderness and witness the power of human transformation of nature.
