Before visiting the Altun Mountain National Nature Reserve (简称阿尔金山保护区), it is essential to understand and strictly adhere to the following stringent booking guidelines and critical notices. Regarding reservations, the reserve ​strictly prohibits unauthorized individual entry. All visitors (including teams and individuals) must apply through legal channels, submitting a written application to the ​Xinjiang Bazhou Altun Mountain National Nature Reserve Administration​ or designated, qualified travel agencies at least ​15 to 30 working days in advance​ to obtain an ​entry permit (separate approval processes exist for scientific research, photography, and exploration)​. The application requires materials such as a detailed itinerary, participant list, identification documents, vehicle information, proof of insurance, and the purpose of entry. The approval process is strict and may be denied for ecological protection or weather reasons, so planning well ahead is crucial. Regarding critical notices for your visit, strict compliance is mandatory: ​First, Regulations and Permits.​​ Upon entry, you must fully comply with all reserve management regulations, staying within ​designated areas and routes. Adequate ​acclimatization training​ is essential. Individuals with serious cardiovascular or pulmonary diseases are prohibited from entering. ​Third, Transportation and Safety.​​ The reserve is an uninhabited area with very poor road conditions and no signal. Travel must be led by experienced professional guides using ​a convoy of at least two high-performance four-wheel-drive off-road vehicles. Equip yourself with a satellite phone, GPS, repair tools, and ample fuel, food, and drinking water (enough for extra days beyond the planned itinerary). ​Fourth, Ecology and Conduct.​​ This is an extremely fragile ecological sanctuary. 阿爾金山國家級自然保護區位於中國新疆維吾爾自治區巴音郭楞蒙古自治州若羌縣南部，地處青藏高原北部邊緣，與青海、西藏兩省區毗鄰，總面積約四萬五千平方公里，平均海拔在四千五百米以上，是中國最大的高山自然保護區。保護區內融合了高山、冰川、高原沙漠、岩溶地貌、湖泊和泉水等多重自然景觀，擁有世界上最高的沙漠——庫木庫里沙漠，以及罕見的沙子泉等獨特地貌。這裡生態系統原始而脆弱，是高原代表性物種如藏羚羊、野犛牛、藏野驢等珍稀野生動物的棲息地，被譽為“高原物種基因庫”。保護區氣候寒冷乾旱，晝夜溫差極大，全年無明顯四季之分，僅有冷暖之別，天氣多變。由於其偏遠的地理位置、嚴酷的自然環境和重要的生態價值，阿爾金山保護區實行嚴格的准入管理，遊客需提前申請通行證方可進入。

The Altun Mountain National Nature Reserve is situated in the southern part of Ruoqiang County, Bayingolin Mongol Autonomous Prefecture, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, China. It lies on the northern edge of the Tibetan Plateau, bordering Qinghai and Tibet, covering an expansive area of approximately forty-five thousand square kilometers with an average altitude exceeding forty-five hundred meters, making it China's largest alpine nature reserve. The reserve integrates diverse natural landscapes including high mountains, glaciers, high-altitude deserts, karst landforms, lakes, and springs. It is home to the world's highest desert, the Kumukuli Desert, and unique features such as the rare Sand Springs. The ecosystem here is pristine yet fragile, serving as a habitat for iconic plateau species like the Tibetan antelope, wild yak, and Tibetan wild ass, earning it the title "Gene Pool of Plateau Species". The climate is cold and arid with extreme daily temperature variations, lacking distinct four seasons but rather a division between warm and cold periods, and is highly unpredictable. Due to its remote location, harsh environment, and significant ecological value, the Altun Mountain Reserve implements strict access management, requiring visitors to apply for permits in advance.
