To visit Yilemu Lake, you need to be aware of the following booking guidelines and important notices. Regarding booking, as a core component of the Koktokay UNESCO Global Geopark (a National 5A-level tourist attraction), Yilemu Lake typically does not have a separate entrance ticket. However, visiting the lake is often associated with the main Koktokay scenic area. If you plan to drive or hire a private car to reach specific lakeside viewing areas directly, it is advisable to check the latest vehicle access policies and the specific opening status of the lake area in advance through the official Koktokay scenic area platform, local travel agencies, or your hotel. This is especially important during winter (November to March) or the rainy season, as some roads leading to the lake may be temporarily closed due to weather conditions (heavy snow, meltwater, rainfall). If your itinerary includes entering the Koktokay scenic area and using the shuttle buses, you will need to book and purchase tickets (including shuttle bus tickets) for the Koktokay scenic area in advance through official channels using real-name registration. Given the lake's altitude of approximately 1,200 meters, its border location, and the highly variable climate and road conditions, it is strongly recommended to plan your trip ahead of time and allow for flexibility. Regarding important notices for your visit, please pay close attention to the following points: First, transportation and safety. If driving yourself, use a vehicle with high ground clearance and stay informed about weather and road conditions. Some roads around the lake are gravel; drive carefully and slowly. The lake area is vast. Do not leave designated viewing areas or marked paths to enter undeveloped zones, to avoid getting lost or encountering danger. Second, climate and gear. The area experiences extreme temperature fluctuations between day and night, and weather can change rapidly. Even in summer, it is essential to bring windproof and warm outerwear, a hat, sunglasses, and apply high-strength sunscreen. Waterproof, non-slip hiking shoes are recommended. Third, environmental protection and regulations. Yilemu Lake is an important water source and natural reserve. Please protect the environment by taking all your trash out of the area. Do not litter, pollute the lake water, pick plants, or disturb wildlife. Do not fly drones in prohibited areas (if such regulations exist), and respect the customs of local ethnic minorities. Fourth, health and supplies. There are very few commercial facilities near the lake. Bring an adequate supply of drinking water and high-energy snacks. Be mindful of altitude sickness and avoid strenuous activity. Mobile phone signals can be unstable; it is advisable to travel with companions and inform others of your itinerary. Finally, photography and sightseeing. The best viewing times are usually early morning and evening when the light is soft, the lake surface is calm, and reflections are at their finest. Always prioritize your personal safety and keep a safe distance from slippery shores and cliff edges while taking photographs.

Yilemu Lake is situated within Fuyun County, Altay Prefecture, in China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. Nestled in the heart of the Koktokay UNESCO Global Geopark on the southern slopes of the eastern Altai Mountains, it is one of the park's most central and mysterious alpine barrier lakes. Its name originates from the Kazakh language, meaning "tranquil lake" or "whirlpool," vividly depicting its deep serenity and underlying currents. The lake was formed by an ancient, powerful earthquake that triggered a massive landslide, damming the river channel. Its most striking geomorphological feature is its massive, nearly perfect figure-"8" shape, which from an aerial view resembles a sapphire inlaid among the vast mountains and canyons. Primarily fed by glacial meltwater and groundwater, the lake's exceptional depth (nearly 100 meters at its deepest point) and mineral richness give its waters a unique, deep hue that shifts between ink-blue, emerald green, and indigo depending on the light and season. On clear days, the intense colors create stunning, multi-layered reflections of the surrounding granite peaks, golden birch forests, and dark green spruce forests, earning it the titles "Eye of Koktokay" and "Hidden Sapphire." The lake area sits at an altitude of approximately 1,200 meters and is surrounded by classic Altai mountain scenery. Summers are cool with lush green grass and wildflowers; autumns paint the forests in vibrant hues, creating a landscape as gorgeous as an oil painting; winters see the lake frozen and the mountains snow-covered, a breathtaking northern wonderland. More than just a scenic natural wonder, Yilemu Lake serves as a living textbook for the Koktokay Geopark, showcasing evidence of paleo-earthquakes, glacial activity, and vertical natural zonation, holding significant value for both scientific research and ecotourism. The best way to experience Yilemu Lake is to drive or hire a car for a leisurely journey along the lakeshore road, stopping at several classic viewpoints to quietly absorb its timeless tranquility and majestic presence.
