Drepung Monastery is nestled on the southern slopes of Gephel Utse Mountain in the western suburbs of Lhasa. As the largest and most magnificent among the six great monasteries of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism, it forms the "Three Great Monasteries of Lhasa" alongside Ganden Monastery and Sera Monastery. Founded in the 15th century by a disciple of Tsongkhapa, this ancient temple complex is built into the mountain, with layered halls and pavissons resembling a mountain city, housing over ten thousand monks at its peak. The monastery treasures countless precious Buddhist artifacts, thangkas, and scriptures. Its main assembly hall, the Tsogchen, is immensely impressive, and the largest Maitreya Buddha statue inside is a sacred wonder not to be missed. The annual Thangka unfolding ceremony during the Shoton Festival is the monastery's most renowned religious event, attracting countless pilgrims and visitors. As a living cultural heritage site, it is not only a vital religious sanctuary but also an exceptional place to experience the profound depth of Tibetan Buddhism and its magnificent architectural artistry.
