Visiting Zhagana requires purchasing an entrance ticket, which can be bought on-site or reserved through official channels. Advance booking is recommended during peak season. The scenic area is open all day, but some internal attractions (such as Lhasang Monastery) have specific visiting hours, so please check in advance. Due to the high altitude (approximately 3,000–3,300 meters), prepare sun protection and warm clothing, avoid strenuous activities, and be mindful of altitude sickness. While exploring, please stay on designated routes and do not enter undeveloped areas or herders' pastures without permission. Respect Tibetan culture and customs; do not photograph villagers, monks, or religious ceremonies without consent. Self-driving visitors should note that some sections (e.g., the "Lock Road") are unpaved, so it is advisable to use high-clearance vehicles and stay updated on weather and road conditions.
Zagana is located in Yiwa Township, Diebu County, within the Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Gansu Province. It is a natural stone city situated at an average altitude of 3,000 to 3,300 meters, with its Tibetan name meaning "stone box." Comprising four villages—Dongwa, Yeri, Dari, and Daiba—along with the Lhasang Monastery, the landform resembles a grand palace naturally constructed by massive rock walls, integrating landscapes such as stone forests, canyons, primeval forests, and alpine meadows. It was highly praised by the American botanist Joseph Rock as "the birthplace of Adam and Eve." Zagana is not only a National AAAA-level tourist attraction and a national geological park but also hosts the "Agro-pastoral Forestry Complex System" recognized by the FAO as a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System (GIAHS). It blends Tibetan farming, nomadic culture, and Tibetan Buddhist heritage, and was recently designated as a "Best Tourism Village" by the UNWTO, making it a model of deep integration between natural and cultural landscapes in the Gannan region.
