Sera Monastery, fully named "Sera Mahayana Monastery," is situated at the foot of Mount Sera Utsé in the northern suburbs of Lhasa. As one of the six great monasteries of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism, it forms the "Three Great Monasteries of Lhasa" alongside Drepung and Ganden Monasteries. Founded by Jamyang Chojey, a disciple of Je Tsongkhapa, the monastery complex is built into the mountain slope, showcasing a blend of Han and Tibetan architectural styles. It houses a significant collection of cultural relics, including the Kangyur scriptures bestowed by the Ming Emperor Yongle and the statue of Horse-Headed Vajra. The monastery is renowned for its daily afternoon Buddhist debates, a dynamic ritual where monks engage in lively philosophical discussions. Combining religious, historical, and artistic value, Sera Monastery stands as both an active place of learning and a quintessential site for experiencing Tibetan Buddhist culture.
