Dunhuang Ancient City (also known as Dunhuang Film and Television City) is located on the Gobi desert about 18 kilometers southwest of Dunhuang City, Gansu Province. It is a large-scale ancient-style film and television shooting base specially built for the Sino-Japanese co-production film Dunhuang (released in 1988). Constructed in 1987 based on the layout of the Song Dynasty Shazhou City and the Along the River During the Qingming Festival painting, the ancient city covers an area of approximately one hundred thousand square meters, with walls reaching eight meters in height, and is built mainly from rammed earth and timber, recreating the market-town atmosphere of a Silk Road hub during the Tang and Song dynasties. Internally, it is divided into five main districts: Dunhuang Street, Gaochang Street, Ganzhou Street, Xingqing Street, and Bianliang Street, reconstructing over a hundred imitation ancient buildings such as government offices, taverns, escort agencies, inns, Buddhist temples, and pawnshops, distinguished by regional decorative styles. As a National AAA-level tourist attraction and a significant film location in northwest China, it has provided shooting scenes for hundreds of film and television productions, including New Dragon Gate Inn, The Investiture of the Gods, and Hero. Today, it is not only a themed scenic area integrating film production, period costume experiences, and Silk Road cultural displays but also, through scheduled performances mimicking ancient street life, interactive activities like horseback riding and archery, creates an immersive “time-travel” journey for visitors, standing in the Dunhuang desert as a temporal stage condensed with cinematic memories.
