Mangya Emerald Lake Visit Guidelines and Notices
Mangya Emerald Lake is a freely accessible natural landscape that requires no entrance ticket or reservation; visitors may proceed directly to the site. During your visit, please be sure to observe the following: a parking area is available at the entrance; driving any vehicle into the salt lake area is strictly prohibited to prevent water pollution and damage to the salt crust. The salt dikes within the lake area are open for walking, but due to their slippery and sometimes soft surface, please proceed with caution and mind your safety. The lake water is highly concentrated brine, which is corrosive—avoid direct skin contact and do not drink it. There are no dining, shopping, or other commercial facilities within the scenic area, so bring sufficient drinking water and sun protection. Please take all personal trash with you to help preserve the pristine environment of this salt lake. The best time for visiting is on clear, windless mornings or evenings when the lake surface is calm and mirror-like, offering optimal reflection effects.
Mangya Emerald Lake is located approximately 23 kilometers southwest of Huatougou Town in Mangya City, Haixi Prefecture, Qinghai Province, situated at the westernmost edge of the Qaidam Basin. This artificial salt lake was formed by mining salt ponds and the convergence of underground potassium-rich brine. Its name derives from the distinct emerald green hues produced by the refraction of light through the high concentration of magnesium sulfate impurities in the water. The lake surface is divided into geometric blocks of varying sizes by intersecting white salt ridges, resembling a massive jigsaw puzzle of emerald pieces set into the Gobi wilderness. Under clear skies, the water’s color shifts with the light, transitioning from mint green to deep emerald, together with the crimson Danxia landforms of Yingxiong Mountain in the distance, the azure sky, and the crystalline salt flowers precipitated at the lake bottom, forming a magnificent plateau tableau. As one of the recently acclaimed "Mirrors of the Sky," Mangya Emerald Lake not only captivates countless photography enthusiasts with its pure and magical colors but also showcases another awe-inspiring form of wilderness beauty in the Qaidam Basin through its unique symbiosis of human-made and natural elements.
