A’rou Monastery (full name: “A’rou County Xihong Fazhou”) is a Gelug school Tibetan Buddhist monastery located in A’rou Township, Qilian County, Qinghai Province, at an altitude of approximately 2,900 meters and about 21 kilometers from the county town. Founded during the Ming Dynasty Wanli era, it initially served as a mobile “tent monastery” that migrated with nomadic tribes before settling at its current site in 1946. The architecture blends Tibetan and Han styles, featuring a double-eaved hip-roofed Grand Sutra Hall, Eight Auspicious Stupas, and a yurt-style Maitreya Hall. Covering approximately 66,700 square meters, the monastery houses ancient scriptures and ritual artifacts and was designated a provincial-level cultural relic protection unit in 2008. As the largest and oldest monastery in Qilian County, it remains an active site of pilgrimage and prayer, set against a tranquil grassland landscape with snow-capped mountains, offering a unique blend of nature and cultural heritage!
