The Jokhang Temple, situated on Barkhor Street in the heart of Lhasa's old town, is the holiest center of Tibetan Buddhism, holding supreme status in the hearts of the faithful. Built by King Songtsen Gampo in the 7th century, it is the most magnificent surviving structure from the Tubo period in Tibet and also the earliest timber-and-earth construction. It masterfully blends architectural and artistic styles from Tibet, Tang China, Nepal, and India, making it a timeless classic of Tibetan religious architecture. The temple's most sacred treasure is the Jowo Shakyamuni statue, a life-sized likeness of the Buddha at age 12, brought to Tibet by Princess Wencheng. It is enshrined in the Jokhang (or "Tsuglhakhang"), the central hall perpetually illuminated by countless butter lamps. The three pilgrimage circuits surrounding the temple—the Nangkhor, Barkhor, and Lingkhor—form the spiritual arteries of Lhasa's city life, where devout pilgrims are seen prostrating and circumambulating throughout the day amidst the smoke of burning juniper. Designated as a National Key Cultural Relic Protection Unit in 1961, the Jokhang Temple was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000 as an extension of the Potala Palace site.
