Rongbuk Monastery itself does not require individual reservation, but entry to the Mount Qomolangma (Everest) National Park where it is located requires purchasing an admission ticket (including the eco-bus ticket). It is advisable to buy tickets at least one day in advance, either online (e.g., through the “Everest Base Camp” official account) or offline (at the tourist service center in Shigatse). Before traveling, a valid Border Permit (specifying “Shigatse Region” or “Tingri County”) must be obtained at your place of household registration or in Lhasa, and you should spend at least 1–2 days acclimatizing to the high altitude in Shigatse or Tingri County. The monastery sits at approximately 5,154 meters above sea level, making it the world’s highest temple; running or jumping is strictly forbidden, and it is essential to carry altitude-sickness medication, portable oxygen canisters, and effective sun protection gear. Visitors must maintain silence inside the monastery, are strictly prohibited from taking frontal photographs of monks, nuns, or Buddha statues, and must adhere to religious protocols such as moving clockwise and not touching prayer wheels. All personal waste must be taken back to designated collection points to protect the fragile plateau ecosystem. Overnight accommodation is only available in Tingri County or the scenic area’s tent camps; camping at or near Rongbuk Monastery is not permitted. Final opening conditions should be verified one day in advance through the scenic area’s official announcements.
Rongbuk Monastery is situated on the summit of Drolma (Tara) Mountain on the eastern and western sides of the Rongbuk Valley in Tingri County, Xigazê City, Tibet, at an altitude of approximately 5,154 meters, making it the highest temple in the world. Founded in 1899 by the Red Sect lama Agwang Danzeng Luobu, it belongs to the Nyingma sect of Tibetan Buddhism and is a unique mixed-gender monastery housing both monks and nuns. The monastery is divided into old and new sections: the old temple preserves sacred sites such as the meditation cave of Padmasambhava and stones imprinted with his hand and footprints, while the new temple offers an exceptional vantage point for viewing Mount Everest, where the mountain's pyramid-shaped peak and the "banner cloud" phenomenon are clearly visible. As a key base camp for the northern ascent of Everest, Rongbuk Monastery embodies both mountaineering culture and Tibetan Buddhist devotion, with its prayer circuit, Cham dance rituals, and valuable murals reflecting profound cultural significance.
