Gurugyam Monastery (Zutrul Phuk) is the core overnight stop on the second day of the Mount Kailash kora. Accommodation at the monastery’s guesthouse is arranged on-site with limited bed space, so early arrival is recommended. Before visiting, ensure you have purchased the Mount Kailash scenic area ticket and obtained the required border permit. The monastery is situated at an altitude of approximately 4,860 meters, so precautions against altitude sickness are necessary. Lodging conditions are very basic, typically consisting of dormitory-style shared beds; it is advisable to bring your own sleeping bag, high-energy food, and personal medications. Please respect the religious site by maintaining quiet, refraining from photographing statues or monks without permission, and taking all trash with you.
Gurugyam Monastery (also known as Zutrul Phuk or Zhongzhepu Monastery) is the final significant temple on the outer kora route around Mount Kailash, situated on the south bank of the Zongchu River on the eastern side of the sacred mountain, at an altitude of approximately 4,760 meters. The temple is built around the legendary "Cave of Miracles," which is said to have been formed when the Kagyu master Milarepa used his supernatural powers to place a massive rock as a roof for shelter during a competition with the Bon master Naro Bonchung; the cave still preserves sacred footprints and headprints believed to have been left by Milarepa. The monastery primarily houses a gilded bronze statue of Milarepa and a golden bronze statue of Shakyamuni with his two disciples, serving as a major overnight stop for pilgrims on the second day of the kora and a sacred site where the fusion of Buddhist and Bon cultures can be experienced.
