Zhire Temple (Drirapuk Monastery) is located on the high-altitude Mount Kailash kora route. Generally, no separate reservation or ticket is required, but if you plan to stay at the monastery’s guesthouse, it is advisable to confirm availability in advance due to limited bed spaces. Before visiting, obtain a border permit and acclimatize to the high altitude. Situated at about 5,210 meters above sea level, the area experiences severe cold and changeable weather conditions. Essential preparations include warm, windproof, and sun-protective gear, as well as high-calorie food. Respect religious customs by maintaining quietness, refraining from photographing statues or monks without permission, and help preserve the environment by taking all trash with you.
Zhire Temple (also known as Drirapuk Monastery) is a significant monastery on the Mount Kailash kora pilgrimage route. Situated on the northern face of the sacred mountain at an altitude of approximately 5,085 meters, it serves as a core resting and viewing point for pilgrims on the first day of their journey. Built by the master Gotsangpa in the 13th century against the mountainside, its Tibetan name means "Monastery of the Female Yak Horn," derived from the legend of Gotsangpa being led by a yak to discover horn imprints on a cave ceiling. This spot offers an exceptional vantage point for closely admiring the "Sunlit Golden Summit" of Kailash's north face, with three peaks symbolizing Manjushri, Avalokiteshvara, and Vajrapani visible across the river. The temple preserves the sacred "Yak Horn Cave" and exquisite murals, blending religious culture with stunning natural scenery.
