Erlangshan Tunnel is a 24-hour traffic facility that requires no reservation or ticket purchase. Please note: stopping, slowing down, or taking photos inside the tunnel is strictly prohibited—drive safely according to the speed limit (usually 80 km/h) with headlights on; if you wish to take photos or enjoy the view, safely stop only at designated parking areas at either end of the tunnel, never occupying traffic lanes; mountain weather is changeable, and the tunnel entrance area is prone to icing in winter—be sure to check your vehicle and tires in advance and pay attention to real-time road condition information.
The Erlangshan Tunnel is located at the border of Tianquan County in Ya'an City and Luding County in Ganzi Prefecture, Sichuan Province. As a critical project of the G4218 Ya'an-Kangding Expressway, it spans 13.4 kilometers at an altitude of approximately 2,200 meters, making it the highest-altitude and longest extra-long highway tunnel on a plateau in the world. The tunnel passes through 11 fault zones, overcoming world-class challenges such as high-pressure water inflow and rockbursts. It reduces the original dangerous 2-hour mountain crossing over the Erlangshan Pass to a safe 15-minute drive, completely eliminating the problem of road closures due to ice and snow in winter. Starting from Labahe Town in Tianquan County in the east and ending at Luqiao Town in Luding County in the west, the tunnel serves as a "strategic throat project" on the Sichuan-Tibet route. It is not only an awe-inspiring mega-engineering feat but also an economic and cultural link connecting the Chengdu Plain with the Ganzi Plateau. The viewing platforms at both ends have become popular stops for self-driving tourists.
