Tangra Yumco is a free-to-enter AAAA-class scenic area, requiring no prior reservation; visitors may arrive at any time. The site is located deep within the Changtang Plateau in Wenbu Township, Nyima County, Nagqu City, Tibet, at an altitude exceeding 4,600 meters. Ensure your body is acclimated to high elevations before traveling, and carry sufficient oxygen equipment and anti-altitude sickness medication. Due to its remoteness, parts of the route consist of rough tracks; it is recommended to use a capable off-road vehicle, plan your journey in advance, and carry extra fuel. During your visit, please respect local Bon religious customs (e.g., circumambulate the lake counterclockwise), do not litter by the lakeshore, and avoid disturbing the natural behavior of wildlife. As network coverage in the area is weak, download offline maps ahead of time and refrain from venturing alone into uninhabited areas.
Tangra Yumco is situated in the heart of the Changtang Plateau in Wenbu Township, Nyima County, Nagqu City, Tibet, at an altitude of approximately 4,600 meters. It is the fourth largest lake in Tibet and the second deepest lake in China. As the foremost of the three holy lakes of Bon religion, it forms, together with Mount Dagor, the core of the Bon “Sacred Mountain and Holy Lake” belief system. The lake stretches north-south, shaped like a vajra (ritual scepter), and its waters display magical shades of blue, green, and purple depending on the angle of light. On its shore stands Yumbun Monastery, one of the oldest temples of Bon, while remnants of an ancient palace of the Zhangzhung Kingdom lie along the lakeside, considered the cradle of early Tibetan Zhangzhung civilization. Designated as a national AAAA-class tourist attraction and a national wetland park, Tangra Yumco uniquely blends sacred religion, spectacular nature, and profound historical value.
