Zhangmu Port does not require advance booking for visits. However, as an international border crossing, all individuals must pass through immigration inspection with a valid Border Permit or passport (containing a valid Nepalese visa). The port's joint inspection hall is typically open from 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM on weekdays, though hours may be adjusted on holidays or occasionally; it is advisable to confirm before traveling. Be sure to obtain the "People's Republic of China Border Area Entry Permit" for Nyalam County in advance, either at your place of household registration or in Lhasa. Unauthorized photography is strictly prohibited within restricted areas of the port, especially of border defense facilities, personnel on duty, and inspection procedures. Due to its location on the southern slopes of the Himalayas, the climate is humid and rainy, with winding, steep roads—exercise caution when driving and prepare rain gear. Respect the customs of local ethnic groups such as the Sherpas, and feel free to engage in friendly bargaining when shopping in the market. Always carry identification documents for inspection and keep personal belongings secure.

Zhangmu Port is situated in Zhangmu Town, Nyalam County, Shigatse, Tibet, on the southern slopes of the central Himalayas. It serves as the western terminus of the China-Nepal Highway (the end of National Highway 318) and is a Class I land trade port. Perched at an average altitude of approximately 2,300 meters within a steep gorge, its streets and buildings cascade down the mountainside, creating a distinctive "cloud-town" landscape. Historically the most vital and bustling trade gateway between Tibet and Nepal, it blends diverse cultures including Han, Tibetan, Sherpa, and Nepalese, supported by active border markets that once handled over half of China-Nepal trade. The Zhangmu Valley surrounding the port features dramatic vertical ecological zones ranging from alpine cold to subtropical climates, with dense forests and cascading waterfalls earning it the nickname "Waterfall Paradise." Despite impacts from the 2015 earthquake, its freight and passenger functions have steadily recovered, maintaining its role as a crucial economic and cultural bridge between China and Nepal.
