Peikutso Lake is situated at the junction of Gyirong County and Nyalam County in Shigatse, Tibet. It is the largest inland lake within the Qomolangma National Nature Reserve, covering an area of approximately 300 square kilometers with a surface altitude of about 4,590 meters. The gourd-shaped lake is surrounded by mountains on three sides, displaying shimmering blue waters that reflect the 8,027-meter-high Mount Shishapangma. This peak is the only mountain above 8,000 meters entirely within China, and together with the lake creates a breathtaking "mountain-lake mirror" effect. The area preserves a pristine ecosystem inhabited by wildlife such as Tibetan wild asses and black-necked cranes, and is regarded as a sacred lake by locals for pilgrimage circuits. The best time to visit is from May to October, and it is currently free to enter, ideal for self-driving adventures.
